Seeing The World Differently: Google’s ‘Augmented Reality’ Specs Could Arrive in 2012

Remember Cyclops glasses from X-Men, controlling all that power that he otherwise wouldn’t have been able to contain? Well, this latest news from Google is a bit like that, just without the connotations of killing ones enemies and such. Anyway, we digress.

A report from by the New York Times has claimed that Google’s rumoured Android-based ‘X Glasses’ could hit markets before the end of the year.

The official line from the Android creator is precisely nothing, but according to the article, conversations with Google employees ‘familiar with the project’ have revealed new info  – allegedly the augmented reality specs will have either 3G or 4G capability, GPS and numerous other smartphone sensors (such as an accelerometer, gyro etc).

According to the report, the glasses will “tap into a number of Google software products that are currently available”, and use a head-up display to show augmented reality info, sharing data with the Cloud, and using things like Google latitude and Google maps to display navigation information share location.

In addition the glasses will have a low-resolution built-in camera so as to monitor the world in real time, but that is causing an issue in development:

“Internally, the Google X team has been actively discussing the privacy implications of the glasses and the company wants to ensure that people know if they are being recorded by someone wearing a pair of glasses with a built-in camera” said the mystery source.

It all sounds very interesting, but we can’t help but think that these are no more than a novelty device. Why not simplify and make it cohesive with an external device – such as the smartphone already in your pocket? Just a thought Google.

App’raisal: Fuel School

If you’ve always fancied yourself as the next Lewis Hamilton, you might want to have a quick think about how those speedy antics are affecting your wallet. Figures show that driving at 80mph can use up to 25% more fuel than at 70mph, so all that thrashing on the motorway could be draining your petrol tank considerably faster than if you were a more discerning driver. You’re also likely to create a carbon footprint as big as King Kong’s flip flop.

What you need (if you’re guilty of the above) is a conscientious voice of reason in the car with you, a conscientious voice of reason like the one Fuel School provides. This automative app turns your iPhone into a “super-clever driving gadget”, assessing your driving style and making comparisons to previous journeys to help you improve. It pretty much tells you if you’re driving like a numpty so you can make the effort to become more competent! Fuel School is also crammed with loads of top tips on how to maximise your mileage, thus saving you pennies on your petrol.

You may be wondering just how Fuel School can do all this, and unfortunately it doesn’t have anything to do with Harry Potter style magic powers. It simply utilises GPS tech to find out where you are, how fast you’re going, and how steady your driving is. If you pop your iPhone in a fixed position in your car (in the same way you would with a sat nav) and switch on the Fuel School, it will then offer visual and audio commands on how efficient your driving is and give warnings when you enter the naughty red zone on the ‘ecometer’. With the app voicing instructions, you can drive in complete safety without having to take your eyes off the road and prod at your device.

The detailed stats you’re able to access include total journey time, distance travelled, total efficient driving time, and total inefficient driving time, so you won’t be able to hide from the facts if your acceleration is atrocious. Other handy hints offered up by the app include tips on how to manage tyres, getting rid of excess weight (from your car, not your belly), and regular maintenance of your engine. Great for the environment as well as a petrol saving tool, Fuel School is just the thing for those wanting to get thrifty with their motoring.

iPhone App Review: Clear

If you follow the scores of Apple bloggers on Twitter, you’ll have no doubt seen the commotion surrounding the release of Clear for the iPhone last week. It wasn’t just review talk either, as timelines filled up with everything from discussion on initial sales projections to singing the praises of the app’s advanced user interface.

Should you have missed all the excitement and are hearing about Clear for the first time here, you’re probably expecting it to be some fancy new game with console-quality graphics and a big-name studio behind it. Well, prepare for a surprise, and possibly a degree of disappointment too, as Clear is a to-do list app.

Yes, all that fuss concerned an app for keeping track of those important little jobs you don’t want to forget, that essentially repeats what’s possible with the Reminders app that comes built-in to iOS 5. It’s logical then, given the attention, to think Clear must offer a huge array of features that only just stops short of actually doing the task for you.

Except it doesn’t. In fact, it doesn’t really have any major features at all.

If you’ve already used Reminders, or some other to-do list software, you’re likely familiar with what Clear offers. You can build various lists based around certain subjects, then tick them off when you’ve completed the task. Clear‘s iTunes description tries to make the most of this by listing what kind of lists your can make – from reading lists to party guest lists – but ultimately, making lists is all it does.

Given that Clear costs £0.69 and iPhone owners already have the perfectly usable Reminders app for free, who and more importantly why, would you bother buying Clear?

The answer becomes obvious when you open the app and actually get started. Despite its humble feature list, it’s an absolute work of art when it comes to the design and user interface. Instead of buttons to push or boxes to tick, almost everything you can do with clear is performed using gestures, and it’s built around simple but striking boxes.

Here’s an example. Tapping the ‘My Lists’ option presents you with all the lists you’ve created so far, or you can use a swipe down instead. Tap the number next to the title and you’re shown all the entries, which can be scrolled through as usual, and to return to the menu, you pinch the screen. To add a new list or item you can swipe down or tap on the respective screen, then a swipe to the left or right either deletes or marks an item as completed.

Each movement is accompanied by a bow-stroke or a ping, the brightly coloured boxes in which you type information are perfectly legible and although it takes some practice, you’ll soon be swiping, tapping and pinching away through Clear without any trouble.

At least, that’s the theory. In practice, even after giving it a try, it becomes clear that the gestures can be a pain. Yes, you’ll be swiping and pinching, but as to whether you’ll be getting to where you want to be is another thing. Gestures are only as good as their intuitiveness, i.e. if you can’t remember what to do, they’re no good whatsoever. It’s also impossible to pinch the screen using only one hand.

So, it looks ace and has an interesting but not completely successful UI, but how does it do when it comes to performing its job as a to-do list? If all you want to do is add a few words like ‘milk’ or ‘pay gas bill’ it’s acceptable enough, but if you want to write something more meaningful, or have friends with long names, the 28-character limit is horribly restrictive.

If you love the idea of location-sensitive reminders, integration with other apps or creating deep to-do lists bordering on projects, then Clear isn’t for you. It really is a very simple, no-frills app.

But adding items manually into a reminder app is so last year, as with an iPhone 4S you can perform exactly the same task by talking to Siri. This takes only a few moments, involves one button press and the reminder syncs with your Mac too. It’s really no contest.

Clear is all about the design, which is great, and the gesture-based interface, which is even better. As an actual, functioning to-do list it’s not quite so successful, and you’ll need to memorise the gestures to get the most out of it, and even then you’ll be hampered by the app’s limited functionality.

Outside of anyone intrigued by the brilliant design, it’s difficult to recommend Clear, especially if you have an iPhone 4S, as talking to Siri is even more satisfying than using Clear‘s gestures.

Having used Clear for a week prior to writing this review, I’d be surprised if it replaced the Siri/Reminders combination for me, as no matter how cute the violin sounds are, and how cool it feels to swipe this way and that,  it just doesn’t feel as advanced as actually talking to your phone and it doing as it’s told.

Dutch Courage: Samsung To Hold March Press Event In Amsterdam

Samsung has let slip that it’ll be holding a separate event in Amsterdam on 15 March, quelling the disappointment stemming from the recent announcement announcing that it’ll not be announcing anything at Mobile World Congress. Still with us? Right, we’ll continue.

You see, a leaked invitation confirms the date and location for next month’s event has surfaced on the web, and although it doesn’t mention specifics, does contain the words “Samsung Line-up 2012”. Hmm.

Of course, this snippet of info has led to muchos speculation suggesting that the fabled Galaxy S III could be unveiled, especially since Sammy made such a song and dance about the thing NOT being on the cards for MWC.

The press conference could also provide the ideal opportunity to push some of the mid-range efforts Samsung have been preparing for release in 2012. Maybe they have something decidedly snazzy up their sleeves?

It’s still anyone’s guess as to what’ll show up at the moment as there has been no official word from Samsung, but with the date edging ever closer, it wont be too long before we find out.If you can’t wait that long for your fix of new tech though, check out our coverage of Mobile World Congress 2012 from Sunday onwards.

ZTE Adds Mimosa X Android Phone To Roster

Following on from the announcement of the PF200 and N910 Android phones earlier this week, ZTE has made another phone official ahead of Mobile World Congress this morning. Named the Mimosa X, it’s another big-screen Android device, but this time boasts an equally impressive processor.

Just like its sister phones, the Mimosa X will run Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as standard, along with ZTE’s own user interface over the top, all displayed on a 4.3-inch touchscreen with a 960 x 540 qHD resolution.

Inside isn’t just another dual-core processor, but an Nvidia Tegra 2 chip, as seen on devices such as the Motorola Atrix 2 and the original Asus Eee Pad Transformer tablet.

The Mimosa X is the first phone to use the Icera 450 modem too, which Nvidia purchased last year, and combined with a GeForce GPU makes it an all-Nvidia device.

It’s an interesting move by Nvidia, who admitted to AllThingsD that they missed the rush for high-end dual-core phones last year, and indicates it’s willing to use the Tegra 2 on mid-range phones while potentially securing the high-end business with the quad-core Tegra 3.

Aside from the big screen and speedy processor, the Mimosa X isn’t the best-specced phone out there, boasting a 5 megapixel camera and just 4GB of internal memory. This can be boosted to 32GB with a microSD card though.

Expected to go on sale in April, the Mimosa X will join the other two new ZTE phones at Mobile World Congress. Now all we need is a confirmed price, but if it comes close to the sub-$200/£126 cost rumoured for the USA, it’ll represent a great deal of tech for a small investment.

Huawei Ascend D1 Q Press Shots Surface

Official press shots have surfaced online which showcase the forthcoming Ascend D1 Q from Huawei.

The images come via GSMArena and reveal what looks to be a high-end smartphone with a sleek form factor and attention to detail in component design. The display appears to be 4.3-inches or larger and the red on black design is reminiscent of the HTC Sensation XE, although the shape of the device points more towards the iPhone 4/Samsung Galaxy school of design.

The Ascend D1 Q is anticipated to be the first device of Huawei’s flagship Diamond range of handsets. Running Android 4.0 out of the box and widely expected to be powered by the  Nvidia-produced quad-core Tegra 3 processor, the unit is set to propel the Chinese manufacturer into the very top-end of the smartphone market.

It is being speculated that Huawei are looking to launch at least two Diamond handsets at MWC next week, however, only details of the Ascend D1 Q have surfaced so far. Additionally, a 10-inch version of the MediaPad is anticipated alongside hardware and software upgrades to match the device’s larger display.

Keeping Tabs: iPad 3 To Be Bigger, Yet Slimmer

Admit it, you can’t sleep at night. You can’t concentrate on your work, as you gaze into the middle distance, your mind racing. You’ve barely spoken to your family for month and you haven’t fed your cat for so long it’s turned feral and sparked a string of ‘panther’ stories in your local newspaper.

And what is it that occupies your thoughts 24/7? The global financial meltdown? Impending war inIran? Rihanna’s new collaboration with woman-beater Chris Brown?

No, it’s the iPad 3. What will it look like? When will we see it? How much will it cost? When can I look smug in front of my mates?

Well, we can’t answer all those questions, but we can give you a little nibble just to keep you sane for another week.

Tech blog MICGadget  has revealed photos it claims shows the back shell of Apple’s forthcoming tablet.

This shell is shown in comparison to an iPad 2 casing and the most noticeable thing is that the iPad 3 shell is thicker – about 1-1.5mm thicker to be (almost) precise. There’s also much more tapering from the back to the edges, which should make the 3 feel slimmer in the hand.

MICGadget also claims the iPad 3 has a larger camera lens too, pointing to an improved camera which more than likely will be the 8 megapixel one that’s been rumoured.

They also claim an iPad Mini will be launched later this year. The site’s sources reckon the tablet, or tablet-let, will have a seven inch screen and be priced at under $400 in theUS.

As ever with these kind of whispers, we’ve not had even the slightest whiff of confirmation fromCamp Cupertio, but with Apple supposedly planning a press event for 7 March, there’s a chance that an announcement could be made then.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 is Finally Available

As promised in January, Research in Motion has finally let version 2.0 of its PlayBook operating system loose on the world. Despite the tablet going on sale in early 2011, the new, improved software has suffered delays, denying several key features to owners of the tablet.

press release published this morning confirmed the update has been sent out, and a tweet from the official BlackBerry UK Twitter account made it clear that PlayBook owners in the UK could enjoy the new software too.

The new version has several new features, the most important of which being an integrated email client and a complete calendar application. Both of these will integrate with social networks and the contacts app to pull all your friend’s messages and addresses together in one place.

RIM has made it easier to connect your BlackBerry smartphone to your PlayBook too, with an improved edition of BlackBerry Bridge. Using Bluetooth, this allows you to share content between the phone and the tablet, including photos, webpages and documents.

Other new features include a remote control app to let you control aspects of the tablet from a BlackBerry phone, the Print to Go app and a revised keyboard with new auto-correction software.

Finally, a selection of new apps have been released inside the BlackBerry App World, including some which have been ported across from Android.

If you’re a PlayBook owner, you should find the OS 2.0 update ready and waiting under the Software Update menu on your tablet. At 500MB it’s not going to be a quick install, but it’ll definitely be worth the wait.
